How to improvise a cheap computer security camera

Computer security camera could be just the solution you were looking for if you want to monitor your home, but your budget doesn't quite agree.

Professional security cameras and systems involve a significant investment, for a good cause nonetheless, but for those who can't really afford expensive high-tech equipment, a computer security camera will do the trick.

Even if your budget forces you to draw the line at such expenses, it's not all lost. A computer security camera is a cheap and good enough alternative to a home security system, and you can install it yourself with little to no trouble at all.

First of all, we have web cameras. Generally used for chatting online in video conferences, you may just as well use your webcam as a computer security camera when you're not at home. It's not an ideal choice since they have rather poor quality image, but if you can't afford something else it will have to do. Just connect it to the computer via an USB drive, select the area you want to monitor and turn it on. If you can spare a few extra bucks, you can even opt for a computer security camera with an email alert service included, sending images

directly to the police once it's activated. And a great advantage is that webcams are hardly ever noticed, so an intruder will not even think he's being filmed. To turn your webcam into a computer security camera, all you have to do is get a software that supports it.

However, if you're not satisfied with the poor quality of a webcam you can get a more accurate computer security camera system, and still stay within budget. An IP system will provide far better images than a webcam, of significantly higher quality. The cheapest IP system costs about $100, and you can easily install it yourself. Still, don't expect extraordinary images, at this price it won't do miracles. But then again, when you can't afford to spend more a cheap computer security camera is more than perfect.

The great thing about an IP computer security camera is that you can connect it to any standard network and access it conveniently from a web browser. And if you've set up more IP systems, you can connect the to a network. The more, the merrier, right? However, before adding an extra computer security camera, it might be a good idea to check your security level and storage space. Figure that out and you're good to go.

Again, these are not ideal solutions for high quality monitoring. The image is often blurry, of poor quality, and with the cheapest webcams sometimes you can barely see the person caught on camera if the action is somewhere in the background. If you want a better quality monitoring, however, you will have to opt for more sophisticated equipment. Needless to say, sophisticated equipment requires sophisticated pockets. Turning a webcam or an IP system into a computer security camera may not be satisfactory solutions for those who can afford more, but for the budget-conscious, they're a pretty great alternative.
